Patrick Byukusenge claims Muhanze Challenge victory

Patrick Byukusenge (Benediction Club) claimed the victory at Saturday’s Muhazi Challenge, finishing ahead of his teammates and breakaway companions Nsengiman Bosco and Munyaneza Didier.

“I am happy for this victory here in Rwamagana. It had been long since I won a race at Rwanda Cycling Cup.I want to thank my teammates for a job well done today. They put in a lot efforts for my win today.” said Byukusenge

The trio were the only finishers of the 175-kilometer race after they lapped the entire peloton on the penultimate of the final 4-lap circuit in the city of Rwamagana.

The winning move took shape at the last climb of the day halfway the race when Benediction Club riders pulled well clear of the pack and collaborated well over the flat second part of the race to build a lead of 5 minutes over the bunch.

The peloton reaction was too long in coming despite having some powerful threats including Jean Claude Uwizeye,Rene Ukiniwabo and Mathieu Twizerane. As the peloton entered the final circuit, it looked as if it had given up its chances. They were lapped and pulled at the penultimate lap.
